Abstract:

Slides of photographs by Alfred Hart relating to trains show tracks, track construction, tunnels, bridges, railroad cuts, depots, and related scenes. Other Hart photographs show street scenes, wagons, logging, hydraulic mining, mining camps, construction, and Superintendent Strowbridge and family (at Alta). Hart photos show the following areas: Colfax, Sacramento, the Mother Lode region, Sierra-Nevada mountain scenes, the American River, etc. Portraits show Louis Agassiz, Robert Aitken, and many others (including various California pioneers). Slides of train ephemera show train maps, schedules, documents, cartoons, and also include some photographs of Central Pacific Railroad activities in California.
